Although the game has gone through changes since its introduction, there are still some factors about it that remain. Such as using a puck for the game and the length of the ice rink. Eventually set rules came into play to govern the game.
The Stanley Cup
As the game grew in its popularity, annual championships came about. This started in the 1880s. The victors of these yearly games would be awarded the Stanley Cup. This award is recognized as being the oldest trophy within the category of North American Sports. It came about based on the passion of Lord Stanley, who along with family, got great enjoyment from watching this game. It was Lord Stanley’s two sons that convinced their father to contribute a trophy to the game.
As a result, it became a silver bowl that was lined with gold. The first time this trophy was ever awarded was in 1893.
