When one thinks about fishing in Canada they may think this is only available or popular in the summer months. However, with the number of cold months that Canada experiences it has created an opportunity for ice fishing as a sport.
Fishing Tournaments & Derbies
Where the sports aspect comes into play for this activity is through tournaments and derbies. This takes place at those locations that offer the best conditions for ice fishing. This type of sport is more family orientated.
The tournaments are often referred to as fishing derbies. They can be single competitors who compete amongst themselves, or often there are teams. Usually, the competition revolves around who can catch the biggest fish according to weight in the shortest amount of time.
There are many provinces throughout Canada that have the ideal conditions for ice fishing tournaments. They will often hold these at different times of the year so anglers can travel around the country to join in the different competitions.
Many that are new to this sport and the competitions are often shocked to learn about the prize amounts that are awarded. The most popular of these are the Bassmaster tournaments. These are considered to be the most elite. It is common for the first price to be $100,000. Then there is a second prize up for grabs that can be $25,000. With the third-place winner taking home $20,000. There are other competitions on a lower level so those with different skills get to compete as well.
Becoming a Pro
To get to the pro level it means participating in a lot of these recognized fishing tournaments. Then when an angler becomes recognized they then seek out large companies that will sponsor them. It is quite similar to many of the other popular sports.
